Penelope Hill Smith brings together garden design, landscape history and academic research to create landscapes that are both deeply informed and beautifully contemporary. A graduate of The English Gardening School, she also holds a Master's in Design Studies from Harvard University and has undertaken further study at the School of Oriental and African Studies, giving her a unique perspective on the historical and cultural influences that continue to shape gardens today.

Through her award-winning design practice, Penelope works on a diverse range of projects including private gardens, historic landscape restoration, planting design and research into the evolution of gardens and designed landscapes. Her work is characterised by a thoughtful response to history, architecture and place, creating gardens that feel timeless while responding sensitively to the needs of contemporary living. In 2024, her Botanical Fragrance Garden received the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Assessor's Award, further recognising her creative approach to garden design.

At The English Gardening School, Penelope tutors on the Garden Design Diploma, where she encourages students to explore the relationship between history, culture and design. Drawing on both professional practice and academic research, she inspires students to create gardens that are not only beautiful and functional, but enriched by a deeper understanding of the landscapes that have influenced them through time.
