One of the country’s leading garden writers, Clare Foster is Gardens Editor at House & Garden magazine, a post she has held since 2005. Before that she worked at Gardens Illustrated which she joined as a sub-editor with no knowledge of gardening and left as Editor, with a deep passion for gardens and horticulture.

Clare is the author of several acclaimed gardening books including Pastoral Gardens and Winter Gardens, which feature photography by Andrew Montgomery. In 2019 The Flower Garden: how to grow flowers from seed was published leading to a Create Academy course on growing from seed. Her book Compost, published in 2003, was named by Beth Chatto as one of her top 10 gardening books.

Since 2017 Clare has been designing and planting a quarter-acre cottage organic garden in Berkshire which she documents through Bud to Seed, her Substack newsletter and website. She is a passionate advocate of growing from seed and has described herself as an “obsessive” seed sower, searching out new varieties to try every year.
