A special day exploring two important gardens created by H. Avray Tipping, with garden historian Helena Gerrish, including a private tour of the remarkable restoration of the garden at Mounton House.
High Glanau Manor
We begin at High Glanau Manor, Tipping's final home, where Helena will welcome us with coffee and shortbread before leading a private tour of the garden. Helena has spent many years researching Tipping and restoring High Glanau, giving us a rare opportunity to understand the garden through both its history and its planting.
There will then be time for a picnic before we meet again at 2pm at Mounton House.Mounton House
Created by Tipping in the early 20th century, Mounton is one of the most exciting Arts and Crafts garden restorations of recent years. Since 2016, Arne Maynard has worked with the owners and garden team to revive the five-acre garden, using Tipping's original plans, photographs and writings while sensitively developing the garden for the present day. Mounton has a long association with the garden press. The house appeared in Country Life in 1915 and the gardens in 1917, when Tipping was the magazine's influential Architectural Editor. More than a century later, its restoration has again been celebrated in Country Life and Gardens Illustrated. Helena, author of Mounton House: The Birth and Rebirth of an Edwardian Country House, will introduce us to the history of Mounton before we divide into two smaller groups for private tours with Tim Stretton, Head of Gardens, and Steve, Head Gardener. Members of the gardening team will join us along the way to discuss the areas for which they are responsible. We will explore the Pergola Garden, Terrace, herbaceous borders and Bowling Green, Rock Garden, Croquet Garden, Cutting Garden, Greenhouse and frame yard, looking at both Tipping's surviving structure and Arne Maynard's more recent interventions, planting, hedging and topiary. Together, the two gardens offer a fascinating opportunity to see Tipping's work then and now, from Helena's restoration of his own garden at High Glanau to the sensitive reinterpretation of Mounton for a new generation.
