Often given as an unusual and useful present! Our popular course is led by master horticulturist Ben Pope with the opportunity to study at the Chelsea Physic Garden and in two private gardens

Do you have a potentially good garden but do not know where to begin?
The first 3 days of this popular 4 day course take place in the Chelsea Physic Garden lecture room with the final day spent in two private gardens near Petersfield. Your tutor is RHS Master of Horticulture Ben Pope. Covers all you need to know to care for your garden – understanding your soil, choosing and selecting new plants, growing new plants from seed and taking cuttings, common pests and diseases, lawn care, pruning trees, shrubs and climbers, vegetable and fruit growing, control of weeds, mulching and composting are all explained and demonstrated. The final day spent in 2 private gardens brings everything into context and gives time for questions and personal involvement.
Course notes are included and a light lunch on the 1st and final days of the course

Other Short Courses
We currently run a series of EGS Garden Tour days for our alumni. Our vast contact list allows us to offer small groups rare guided visits to private gardens in the UK and in Europe. Our most recent day out in September 2025 took us to two private gardens in Monmouthshire including Arne Maynard's own most beautiful and inspiring garden at Allt-y-bela.
Our program resumes in April 2026 with a morning visit to a historic garden in Oxfordshire. From there, we travel to an ancient castle, where a delightful lunch awaits. The afternoon is devoted to exploring the castle’s beautiful and productive garden, a remarkable creation developed over the past decade.
