Gardens the school is particularly familiar with from the One Year Good Gardening Diploma include the Walled Garden at Arundel Castle and the Long Walk and Entrance Garden at Woolbeding. Isabel and Julian won House \u0026amp; Garden Magazine’s Designers of the Year 2023 and were granted the Royal Warrant of His Majesty King Charles III in 2024. They ‘strive to create magical places which are also for living in’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eYews Farm\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt Yews Farm, Louise and Fergus Dowding have created a highly distinctive garden centred on a large, south-facing walled space. Planting is bold and theatrical, with an emphasis on height, form, foliage and texture, complemented by extensive box topiary. The garden combines both low-maintenance perennial planting and more intensively managed container displays. Productive elements are fully integrated, with vegetables and cut flowers grown together, alongside a working organic kitchen garden and greenhouses filled with seasonal crops. An organic orchard of local cultivars forms part of the wider setting, with free-roaming hens adding to the character of the garden. Self-seeding is actively encouraged, allowing the planting to evolve naturally over time. Managed entirely without artificial chemicals, the garden supports a balanced and self-sustaining ecosystem. The result is a garden with a remarkable sense of history and atmosphere, but one that continues to change and evolve.\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eSpecial Plants\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\n\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpecial Plants, near Bath, is the garden and nursery of renowned plantswoman Derry Watkins. Derry and her architect husband, Peter Clegg, bought the site in 1996, when it consisted of a derelict barn surrounded by muddy fields. Peter designed the garden across the steeply sloping site, using a series of flowing forms and levels, while Derry filled it with the unusual and distinctive plants for which she has become known.\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe garden is both experimental and highly personal. Gravel gardens allow Derry to grow Mediterranean plants despite the heavy clay soil, while natural springs feed ponds, moving water and a bog garden. Elsewhere, a black-and-white border developed from Derry’s 1999 Chelsea exhibit sits alongside an orchard, vegetable garden, woodland walk and Peter’s sculpted hedging, Shapes in the Landscape.\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe adjoining nursery reflects Derry’s lifelong fascination with plants and is particularly celebrated for unusual hardy and tender perennials, grasses, biennials and rockery plants. The house appeared in Country Life in 1915 and the gardens in 1917, when Tipping was the magazine's influential Architectural Editor. More than a century later, its restoration has again been celebrated in Country Life and Gardens Illustrated.\nHelena, author of Mounton House: The Birth and Rebirth of an Edwardian Country House, will introduce us to the history of Mounton before we divide into two smaller groups for private tours with Tim Stretton, Head of Gardens, and Steve, Head Gardener.
